AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Bring headshot and resume. A one-minute contemporary monologue is suggested. Also be prepared to cold read from the script – sides will be provided at the auditions. It is helpful if the character of Margaret can sing and play the piano. Sheet music of “For the Beauty of the Earth” is available online and youtube. The sheet music will also be available at the audition.

SHORT SYNOPSIS:

In this true story of Henrietta Leavitt, an early 20th century astronomer hampered in her passions because she was born into an age where women didn’t pursue such things, the struggle for equality is brought to vivid life.  The play blends humor and romance in a riveting exploration of her life and how she fearlessly asserted herself in the male-driven, turn of the century world of science and academia.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

All Ethnicities are encouraged to attend.

Below are character descriptions with approximate starting ages for the start of the play. We are in need of actors who can realistically portray these characters over the course of the 20-year span of the play.

HENRIETTA LEAVITT (F, 30-39): Brilliant, determined, a dreamer, hard of hearing (wears a period hearing aid), has never much cared for the “status quo.”

MARGARET LEAVITT (F, 25 – 35): A homebody, genuine, sweet-natured, realist. (Ability to sing and play the piano a plus.)

PETER SHAW (M, 30 – 39): The head astronomer’s apprentice, reserved, his views have never really been challenged prior to the events of the play. He is in love with Henrietta, as she is with he.

ANNIE CANNON (F, 40 – 49): A leader, tough, sure, grows into a firebrand for the suffrage movement.

WILLIAMINA FLEMING (F, 45 – 59): Scottish, intelligent, witty, warm and outgoing, the first of her kind, smart as a whip and fun. (Role requires a Scottish Accent.)
